Denmark summons US envoy over claims of interference in Greenland

Denmark’s foreign minister summoned the top U.S. diplomat in the country for talks after the main national broadcaster reported Wednesday that at least three people with connections to President Donald Trump have been carrying out covert influence operations in Greenland.

In a lengthy written statement, the U.S. State Department confirmed that the deputy chief of mission in Copenhagen, Mark Stroh, had met with Danish foreign ministry officials. It declined to comment “on the actions of private U.S. citizens in Greenland.”

“The U.S. government does not control or direct the actions of private citizens,” it said.

The department said Stroh had “a productive conversation and reaffirmed the strong ties among the Government of Greenland, the United States, and Denmark.” It said the U.S. values its relationships with both Denmark, a NATO ally, and Greenland and noted that Trump and his top aides had all said they respect “the right of the people of Greenland to determine their own future.”

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says that DR’s revelations today underscore the seriousness of the matter concerning relations with the United States.
She reiterates several times that it is both unacceptable and deeply concerning.

“I take note of the fact that the Americans are not clearly denying the information presented by DR today, and of course that is serious,” she told the Danish media.

She emphasizes that, from the very beginning, that President Trump was serious when he declared his intention to purchase Greenland. She therefore does not believe the issue has simply gone away.

At the press conference, the Prime Minister explained that she had “just a short while ago” concluded a meeting with members of the U.S. Senate currently visiting Europe.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the meeting had been scheduled before DR’s report on alleged influence campaigns.

The meeting was also attended by Vivian Motzfeldt, Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Government of Greenland.

“We have made it very clear that this is unacceptable. And it is something we will raise directly with our colleagues in the United States – who, if this were untrue, could very easily dismiss the claims,” Mette Frederiksen said.
